Forum Diskurs International ist eine Veranstaltungsreihe des ISM-Kuratoriums zu internationalen linken Perspektiven.

Im November stehen in den USA Präsidentschaftswahlen an und aller Voraussicht nach wird es wieder zu einer Wahl zwischen Trump und Biden kommen. Die Biden Administration kann eine ökonomisch erfolgreiche Bilanz und viele große Projekte zur sozial-ökologischen Transformation vorweisen und es laufen zahlreiche Gerichtsprozesse gegen Trump. Trotzdem besteht die Gefahr, dass Trump erneut die Präsidentschaft erringt, was drastische Folgen für Klimapolitik, internationale Zusammenarbeit, Frauen- und Freiheitsrechte in den USA haben würde und eine der ältesten Demokratien der Welt ernsthaft gefährden könnte.

Wie ist die politische Situation in den USA ein halbes Jahr vor den Wahlen und wie stellen sich die Demokrat:innen und progressiven Kräfte für diesen Wahlkampf auf? Mit Blair Taylor, Politikwissenschaftler, Autor und Programmdirektor am Institut for Social Ecology wollen wir darüber diskutieren wie es in dieser existenziellen Auseinandersetzung zwischen den beiden etablierten politischen Lagern und angesichts eines widrigen Wahlsystems für linke Kräfte möglich ist, ihre Inhalte voranzubringen.

Blair Taylor ist Politikwissenschaftler und Programmdirektor am Institute for Social Ecology, einem emanzipatorischen Bildungszentrum für ökologische Forschung und Politik in den USA. Er hat bei Nancy Fraser an der New School for Social Research in New York promoviert und zu sozialen Bewegungen in den USA, gegenwärtiger rechtsextremer Politik, politischer Ökologie und zur Geschichte der Linken veröffentlicht.

Johannes Angermuller ist Sprecher des ISM-Kuratoriums und Professor für Diskursforschung an der Open University in Großbritannien.

Trump versus Biden again - Discourse International on left-wing politics in the USA

Forum Discourse International is a series of events organized by the ISM Scientific Council on international left-wing perspectives.

Presidential elections are happening in the USA in November and we will likely once again see a race between Trump and Biden. The Biden administration has an economically successful track record and many major projects for socio-ecological transformation, and there are numerous court cases against Trump. Nevertheless, there is a risk that Trump will win the presidency again, which could have drastic consequences for climate policy, international cooperation, women's rights and civil liberties in the USA and seriously jeopardize one of the oldest democracies in the world.

What is the political situation in the USA six months before the elections and how are the Democrats and progressives positioning themselves for this election campaign? With Blair Taylor, political scientist, author and program director at the Institute for Social Ecology, we want to discuss how it is possible for left-wing forces to advance their demands in this existential contest between the two established political camps and in the face of an adverse electoral system.

Blair Taylor is a political scientist and program director at the Institute for Social Ecology, an emancipatory education center for ecological research and policy working in the US. He received his PhD in Political Science from Nancy Fraser at the New School for Social Research (New York) and has written and published on social movements in the US, contemporary far-right politics, political ecology and the history of the left.

Johannes Angermuller is spokesperson for the ISM Scientific Council and Professor of Discourse Research at the Open University in the UK.
